What message are you sending?

So as I was walking home today and I saw the dumbest sign in history hanging in someones house.

It said "WE CALL POLICE"

I'm thinking to myself. What's the point of that? Is that some sort of anti-break-in deterrent? I mean doesn't EVERYONE call the police if someone were to do something suspicious on their property. Isn't that a pointless message you are sending?

Let's be academic about this for a few seconds. What was the goal of the sign? I'm guessing it's intent is to somehow deter criminals. I tried to get into the mind of a criminal and my criminal rationale is that....if I were to break into a house. It would be that one. See, everyone calls the police. That fear is already there no matter what house I break into. But the X factor is, what are the residents going to do? That sign basically says, we won't fight back.

Now...I think a more effective sign would say. "We DON'T call police."

Oh. Shit. To quote Jeff Foxworthy, "That's a house where a GUN lives."

Such a small difference in syntax but a totally different message. I love it.
