Every four years, the American people wake up on a cool November morning and realize what the hell they just did. Yup, it's election time and that means another chance for the American people to come together and choose for the candidate that sucks less.
Now, I'll preface this post with the fact that I already know who I'm voting for and I have my reasons. That being said, I am going to try to keep this as fair and center as possible because both campaigns have issues.
After four years of President Bush, many would say that it's time for a change. The question is; is Obama change or is McCain change? Now, i'm not here to try to get you yo vote for my guy. I don't really care much for who you might vote for, that's your call. What I am here to talk about are the political facts and some opinions i've read on blogs and CNN comment sections.
Eight years ago, John McCain ran for President. He didn't win, obviously. Now considering you don't run against a sitting President in your party, he stood still. Now, the McCain we see today is a lot different than 8 years ago McCain. Before McCain was pretty moderate. He was a very center guy who swung slightly right. It didn't work for him. Now he's pandering to the base and a lot of comments I've read say "I'm voting for the old McCain" and "He's just saying whatever people want to hear."
Now, I in no way disagree with any of that. But what i don't understand is how people think this is a new thing. Think about the elections since you have been alive. How many of them kept all their campaign promises? Bush didn't. Clinton didn't. Bush Senior didn't. Regan? Well, i was too young to remember. What about your local senators or congressmen? Do they do every thing they say?
Am I happy about this? No, absolutely not. But my point is this: This is the case in every election but for some reason, we forget. We forget and on November 5th, we wake up and realize what a bad call we just made.
Now, on the same subject, I find it very interesting that people hang on every word Obama says. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Obama is a bad guy, I don't think McCain is a bad guy either, but that doesn't mean they don't lie. After all, Obama is a politician from Chicago, the most corrupt town in the world. Chicago has it's own government and it's slightly more of a monarch than democracy. Yet despite this, Obama apparently never lies, tells anything untrue, and will always keep his word. This is a very interesting double standard.
Political marketing has been good at clouding our judgment. "Nothing to see here folks. But that guy is an asshole." And we all turn and look. McCain has done a piss poor job of slamming Obama. This has a lot to do with Obama's lack of political history and his well designed policies. McCain simple can't attack Obama and where the opportunity has presented itself, he blows it. This has been the plight of the GOP for ever though. After all, it's not winning any votes to say cheap housing for the poor is a bad thing.
Obama on the other hand has attacked McCain on a good policy debate. So far Obama has won that debate, and the three actual debates for that matter. However, politicians still lie. Both of these guys do and to think otherwise is just ignorant. McCain has a long history in the Senate and we can see where he said one thing and voted the other way. Obama on the other hand has little history so we can't see his lies. So essentially, we are voting for either a historical lair or a guy who we don't know what he's lying about.
Sure, I'm being a little negative, but that's just the problem. Not enough people are. Sure, far leftest and extreme Obama supporters hang on ever word he says and thinks everything coming from McCain/Palin is straight up right-propaganda and a total lie. Indeed, all the McCain loyalists think the same coming from the Obama/Biden camp. The real answer as usual lies right in the center. They are both full of shit. Do you honestly and truly think that Obama can get his health care plan off the ground while lowering taxes? Keep dreaming. Do you really think McCain can get his off the ground by lowering taxes on the rich? Again, keep dreaming. 90% of what you hear from both candidates is not going to happen. You just have to decide which 10% is going to happen and which 10% is better.
When I read that McCain is just saying what people want to hear so he can win, I thought to myself, so what? Obama is doing the same damn thing. People want change, he's saying he'll give it to him. The real question I ask though, is this really a bad thing? Winning is not even half the battle. Once you win, you then can really make the difference. Maybe saying what needs to be said, even if untrue is exactly what they should be doing. Maybe that's what we need. After all, with 300 Million Americans, we all want something different. Why not say it all then do what you think will better the country when you get into office?
Anyone running for President wants to better the country. I'm not a big Bush guy, but if you think Bush went to war to better his pockets and those of his buddies, you're insane. If you think Bush didn't do it to better his pockets and those of his friends, you're insane. He's a politician. Kick-backs are a part of the business, but they aren't the main reason to do the job.
So now, with only a few weeks until the election, you have to ask yourself, who has the better 10%. They are both full of shit and they both have the best intentions for our country. They just have different ways to better things. All I know is that the right is out of touch with reality and the left is just ignorant. So where the hell is the real answer?
I'll see you November 5th around 7a.m. and if my guy wins i'll regret it and if your guy wins, i'll really regret it. Aren't elections fun?
