Facebook Chain Mail

Anyone on Facebook get a couple of these messages lately?

Facebook is recently becoming very overpopulated. There have been many members complaining that Facebook is becoming very slow. Record shows that the reason is that there are too many non-active Facebook members and on the other side, too many new Facebook members. We will be sending this message around to see if the members are active or not. If you're active, please send to other users using Copy+Paste to show that you are active. Those who do not send this message within 2 weeks, the user will be deleted without hesitation to create more space. If Facebook is still overpopulated, we kindly ask for donations but until then send this message to all your friends and make sure you send this message to show me that your active and not deleted.

Founder of Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg

Well...this might be the dumbest thing I've ever read, dumb even for Facebook standards.

So what now? Facebook is apparently deleting profiles now because it's over-populated and non-active users are slowing down the site. Uh..ok.

First problem with this argument. If site speed is the problem, then the reason Facebook would be slow would be caused by ACTIVE users constantly logging in, sucking away bandwidth. Not from the people who haven't logged into Facebook in months. Those people only cost Facebook hard drive space.

Second problem. If Facebook wants to measure who has logged into it lately, they sure as hell won't do it through a clumsy viral message. They keep records of EVERYTHING you do. It's their network, and their data, and believe me they are recording everything they can so they can figure out the best formula to sell ad's and figure out what new features to add.

Furthermore, the very idea that Facebook considers overpopulation a problem might be the dumbest suggestion in this email. Why do you think Microsoft tried to buy Facebook for $240 million. It wasn't for the actual program and code of Facebook. This is Microsoft we are talking about. You know....the Borg, the Yankees of the software industry, the Roman Empire in 300 AD, Oprah at a craft show....they don't need help writing that kind of software.

Facebook's value and their biggest commodity IS the fact that they are overpopulated. Microsoft is willing to pay $240 million because in acquiring the Facebook network they get access to all those "overpopulated" people that this message alleges Facebook is trying to get rid of. Facebook's wealth comes from the fact that, at their core, they are really just a big fuckin' rolodex.

Finally if Zuckerberg really wanted to send out a mass message like this, don't you think he would have had someone proofread it first?

"show me that your active and not deleted."

The only thing that needs to be deleted is this stream of messages.
